It is a childhood memory that the trees speak in the wind. The glimpse of light through the trees is hidden by the dark silhouettes of tree foliage and tree trunks. These surprising compositions of light and colour are offset by the surroundings, giving a claustrophobic composition. What we all know as sentiment in woods open up emotions which cover the whole spectrum; the delight for the adult to be left in peace in serene surroundings is a relief to the senses, possibly walking the dogs which direct us to places that we would not normally pass by. The pleasure with which the picture is painted reflects heavenly light where the grays of the tree trunk define, as Pierre Bonnard was quoted as saying, 'gray is the hinge of colour(s)'. This is a capture like a photograph which we are all invited to visualise. Written by E. Waller 12/01/10
