Having said that Slater's work marvels at the level of execution of metal materials. The branch of his understanding of his art is perhaps undermined by the collectibility of the stones in the foreground, quite out of place but sculptural in a fluid painting style. The stark use of toiquoise, and earthy copper or yellow ocre mixed with fluid of colour to give a shellac, a veneer of sticky molten metal. Perhaps it is the proof of the materials that provide for the answers for this piece. The composition stacked up high is defined by the material and not the shape. This towering of elements is self-evident as a growing feature of his work. The manner with which it is done is different but standing neverthetheless. Written by E. Waller 23/03/10
