Brothers in Botswana

This painting is inspired by a trip to Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana which is home to a beautiful pride of lions and the landscape is stunning. Whilst camping there in the bush we could hear the male lions calling during the night, this was quite a daunting experience as there was only the thickness of a tent between us and them.

A scene from the book of the nature reserve. The lions here in their element are somehow 
ready for the painter, or photographer; their sense of harmony is a sign of ease with
each other.  The slightly rustic dryness and brown vegetation all ties in with the 
colours of the animals.

Despite the obvious use of a low horizontal landscape, the lions stand up to and watch
around them as if looking up. Their eyes brown and unflinching, they are in full control.
Only the sides of the composition do not sit easy to the end of their tails as pointers to 
another scene which will not be described by this painting.
