I see myself as a post impressionist figurative
painter, who tries to create a balance between
abstraction and realism. My subject matter varies
and I enjoy painting in all media.
As a child, I was encouraged by my father, who
worked in Pastels, to Draw, Paint and to see Colour.
However, I was not encouraged to take up art as a
career. Instead I read agriculture and later Human
Nutrition. These qualifications took me to work in
Africa and the South Pacific, so it is not surprising
that I have an interest in things tropical and rural,
and that Gauguin has been a big influence in my
use of colour.
I also admired the Scottish Colourists
and to some extent the Fauves.
Colour is what usually attracts me to a subject, but
on the other hand, it may be an underlying idea or
the depiction of something foreign that catches my
imagination. I may exaggerate the colour, but still
aim to convey a feeling of the place.
Although I used to prefer Oils, which I first tried in
Uganda, I now enjoy slow drying Acrylics. When
living in Singapore, I had the chance to attend the
Nanyang Academy of Fine Art for a few months and
at the same time to learn to do Batik paintings.
Later, I exhibited with the Batik Guild in London
and spent two weeks teaching Batik to the Bushmen
in the Kalahari desert.
Not only have my husband and I lived and worked
abroad, we have also travelled fairly extensively. All
of which has fed my visual experience. Wherever we
have lived, I have been lucky to find good Art
groups and tutors, as well as, opportunities to
exhibit my work.
I am currently a Member of the
Ipswich Art Society, the Southwold Art Circle and
one of the Five Blyth Painters and exhibit with all of
them. I have twice been a finalist in the over 60s
Art Awards at their London exhibition.
Wide exposure overseas, means that my Paintings
have been purchased by buyers from Russia, USA
New Zealand and Europe.
